Children's DIY Tic-Tac-Toe Travel Game

Children's DIY Tic-Tac-Toe Travel Game

As the youngest of five children we played a lot of board games. I still enjoy board games to this day, and I am so excited that my children are starting to enjoy them. Now that summer is in full swing I thought it would be fun to have my children help me with a tic-tac-toe travel game. This very simple DIY plays double duty as it is the perfect gift for Father’s Day, and it is great entertainment during breaks in our summer outings.

I have seen several tutorials for these on Pinterest, but I was initially inspired by this tutorial from Where the Smiles Have Been. I got my two older children (three-year-old daughter and five-year-old son) to help with this project, and it turned into a beautiful crafternoon. I gave my children creative freedom, and today’s project turned out better than I anticipated. Which teaches me that sometimes the magic is in letting my children dream and play on their own. I love how their paint turned out on this DIY Tic-Tac-Toe Travel Game that they made for their father for Father’s Day. I know they can’t wait to play this with him this Sunday!

Step 1: Pick out 10 rocks of about the same size. My children loved finding the rocks with me. Ensure they aren’t too big so that they fit inside the grid of the tic-tac-toe bag.

Step 2: Spray paint each side of the rocks. I had gold and copper spray paint on hand. So I thought it would be fun to paint 5 rocks in copper to play with the pink rocks, and 5 rocks in gold for the blue toned rocks.

Step 3: Let your children use their creative freedom to help paint 5 rocks one color tone, and 5 rocks a different color tone. Set aside to dry.

Honestly when I include my three and five-year-old in crafternoon sessions I never know what I am going to get. I normally expect a big mess with lot of laughs. However, it is fun to watch a final project transform as they use their creative hearts. Today’s project is one that turned out better than I anticipated. I love how their messy paint skills transformed the rocks into beautiful and vibrant stones.

Step 4: While the rocks dry, draw the tic-tac-toe grid with a paint marker. You can use a ruler to get exact lines and measurements for your grid, or you can wing it like I did.

*Go over the grid lines about 5 times with the paint marker to get the desired darkness and thickness onto the jewelry bag.

Step 5: Once the rocks dry, spray paint them with the Mod Podge Clear Acrylic Sealer to seal them and enjoy them for years to come.
