Homemade Peppermint Candy Tree Topper

Homemade Peppermint Candy Tree Topper

Last week I showcased one of my favorite Christmas crafts as a child: Peppermint Candy Christmas Tree. Today I would like to show you how I made the fun topper atop that peppermint candy Christmas tree. I was inspired by this ornament post from One Little Project to create the tree topper.

I love this simple DIY, because you can apply this method to create a fun ornament, name tag for a holiday table, or whatever your heart desires. With a little imagination this technique can also be used for other holidays with different hard candy colors and cookie cutters. The possibilities are endless!

To make your own candy tree topper, you will need:

Step 1: Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.

Step 2: Spray the inside of the cookie cutter with cooking spray. Ensure the parchment paper and sides of the cookie cutter are coated.

Step 3: In a single layer, add the peppermint candies to the inside of the star. Try to cover the inside of the star so the candies cover all parts of the star when they melt. It is helpful to break the candies into pieces to provide the best coverage.

Step 4: Place the hard candies in the 350 degree oven, and put the timer on for 5-10 minutes. Place the oven light on and watch the candies melt. My candies took about 7 minutes to melt. Once the candies melt into all areas of the cookie cutter take them out of the oven, and let them cool for about 5 minutes.

*If you want to turn your peppermint candies into ornaments, wait about 3 minutes (out of the oven) then use a toothpick to create a hole at the top of your ornament.

Step 5: After about 5 cooling minutes, remove the excess peppermint candy from the cookie cutter with your finger to create a crisp line. Then slowly push the melted peppermint candies out of the cookie cutter, and marvel at your creation!

Step 6: Put the lowest heat setting on your hot glue gun, then add a thin line of glue to the bottom of the star and firmly press into the peppermint candy styrofoam tree.

*Add additional glue to stabilize the star, if you need to.
